Peter Roberts is a resident of Geelong Victoria Australia. He left his successful retail furniture and interior decorator business of 18 years mid life, to pursue an alternative career in the use of therapeutically played music in hospital settings. Accompanied by his wife and family, he travelled to the United States to attend a school based at St Patrick Hospital in Montana where he studied for two and a half years. The school was a palliative care initiative of the hospital and trained musicians in the use of live “prescriptively played’ music played at the bedside of people facing the end of their lives (Music-thanatology). In this work the principal instruments used are harp and voice.
He set up a private practice in 1997 on his return to Australia and has been working in this field since. He is currently employed part time at St John Of God Hospital in Geelong, and is able to play for palliative patients within the community in Geelong and Melbourne at no charge to them as the result of various grants. He is often called on as a public speaker regarding his field of work and there has been significant media interest in his work. Peter also imports, builds and teaches harp.
