Music-thanatology is recognised as a sub specialty of palliative medicine. The approach of music –thanatology offers through the musician, specialized musical skills with harp and voice and a genuine loving presence which ministers to the emotional, physical and spiritual need of dying patients. It is the combination of live prescriptively played music and a deliberate genuine presence in the service of the dying that differs it from most other forms of music as therapy. It has been described as a modern clinical practice that crosses boundaries between palliative and spiritual care (Sasnow in Seldner 2005).
