Music as Medicine

Overview

Peter Roberts playing harp to a babyWhat can music help?

Music is a non-invasive method of influencing heart rate, breathing quality and physical pain.

It can soothe anxiety, fear and restlessness.

It can bring peace and quieten a restless mind.

It can offer consolation and emotional support during intense personal suffering.

It can assist to create meaningful encounters with one another.

It can deepen spiritual connections.

It can affect neural functions, hormonal activity and the body’s own immune system and regenerative processes.

Here’s a small sample of my music for you:

How does this work?

Metaphorically speaking: Music bypasses all thought and speaks directly to the heart.

Physically speaking: ‘It’s all in the brain’

All physical change in the body begins in the brain. The brain receives messages via the body’s neural pathways that sound has been experienced. Once the brain accepts this “sound” as “music” then there can be a musical influence on the body’s physical and emotional levels.

For a fascinating explanation of the complexities of music’s affect on the body refer to The Biomedical Foundations of Music as Therapy by Dale Taylor, 1997.

Research: Deakin University reports on the effect of my own music can be purchased here.
